Gospel and Context: Apologetics and Post-Modernity

This seven-week course will trace a history of worldviews and look at the implications for believers to understand both the gospel and contemporary culture. Understanding worldview trends—from their roots to their implications—can help believers to live faithfully and engage with our world and our ‘neighbors’ more effectively. This workshop will survey somewhat vast worldview systems in order to better understand: a) What does it mean to say that our culture is “post-modern?”; b) What does it really mean to be ‘in the world but not of the world’ as it relates to broader cultural assumptions and appetites?; and, c) What would it look like to effectively engage in an apologetic exchange with someone who is thoroughly “post-modern?”

Baptism Preparation - for Children Grades 4-6

Baptism is commonly referred to as an outward symbol of the inner reality. Baptism involves the public proclamation and identification with Christ, and His body, the Church. This class will explore three main questions: 1) What does it mean to be a Christian and how do we know we are one? 2) How did we come to practice baptism? 3) What is the meaning of baptism? The parent's understanding of baptism and of their child's spiritual life are vital in determining a child's readiness for this ceremony. It is required that at least one parent attend with their child. If this is not possible, arrangements should be made for another adult to fill this imortant role.

Understanding the New Atheist Movement

It has been a busy two years for atheism. The release of several major books, all widely touted in the media, has put atheism on the frontline of current cultural conversation. Books such as Richard Dawkins' "letter to a Christian Nation" and Christopher Hitchens' "God Is Not Great: How Religion Poisons Everything" has prompted hours of conversation on college campuses and in the media. The new atheists condemn not just belief in God, but respect for the belief in God. Theism is not ony wrong - it is evil. Subjects that will be covered in class are as follows: * An examination of the strengths and weaknesses of atheism and theism * The problem of suffering * The role of science in this conflict Bring yourself. Bring a friend. This six-week course is a must for young adults about to enter college, as well as those who have already been exposed to the beliefs held by college professors. We offer a free-flowing discussion that will prepare you for one of the greatest challenges we will face in the next few years.

The Ten Commandments (Part II)

The Ten Commandments are so much more than a limited set of rules that God wants us to obey. They are God’s heart for His people — the law that was put in charge to lead us to Christ. Each commandment should cut us to the heart and bring us to repentance and to Christ. Being emptied, the Lord wants to show us that as we are filled with His love, we can then begin to walk in a way that fulfills these commandments. Thinking further, we also see that each of these commandments give us a glimpse of God’s very character. We will continue this spring, studying the 5th-10th commandments. The class includes homework questions, discussion, praise and prayer. An added blessing— the study of God’s word together leads to a wonderful fellowship among all participants.

Peacemakers: Biblical Principles for Handling Conflict

Conflict! Part of every human's existence. We have conflict in our homes, conflict in our neighborhoods, conflict in our workplaces, and in our world. It is all around us. This reality, however, does not take God by surprise. In fact, His Word says much about how to view and handle conflict in a way that brings honor to God, serves others, and helps us grow mature in faith. The Peacemaker study is designed to explore and then apply those truths to the very present conflicts in our lives. Through a discussion format, participants will be able to hone their understanding of passages related to conflict management, and then be challenged to apply these principles to the situations that they, or others they know, currently confront.

Memory and Scripture

No doubt every Christian, at some time, has memorized a few Bible verses. Yet, some think they cannot memorize, or are too old to do so! But perhaps few have looked into the principles involved in strengthening one’s ability to memorize. This class is on memory development with the Scriptures in mind. Our objective is not just the memorizing of verses as such, but the training of the mind to memorize, through the use of the “laws of memory.” Obviously, our aim will be to equip one for grasping Scripture in this manner — to carry it within one’s thinking and apply its truth, when a Bible may not be accessible.
